Handwriting Is on the Wall : Calligraphers from around the world have interpreted the Book of Psalms in script for Platt Gallery’s new show.
LOS ANGELES — Some people think calligraphy is just for addressing envelopes. Geri Bieber knows otherwise.
About 20 years ago, she wandered into a calligraphy class looking for “something interesting and fun to do,” Bieber said. It changed her life. “It became a passion,” she said.
After that first class, she studied calligraphy with the late Maury Nemoy at UCLA Extension. He was considered the mentor of Los Angeles’ Society for Calligraphy. Nemoy sent Bieber to a workshop in Los Angeles on manuscript illumination with Donald Jackson, the scribe for England’s Queen Elizabeth. He remains the Queen’s scribe today.
“There is a whole world of calligraphy that people don’t know about,” Bieber said. “It is a fine art.”
The word calligraphy comes from the Greek word, kalligraphia , which means beautiful writing. One can see an extraordinary variety of calligraphic styles in an exhibit organized by Bieber, “From Psalms: International Invitational Calligraphic Exhibition,” at the University of Judaism’s Platt Gallery.

Introducing The Saint Johns Bibleby Rev. Nancy Brink
June 9,
It is finished.
I mean no disrespect to Jesus, but this month I completed a project that has been four years in the making. Chapman is now the permanent home of the Heritage Edition of The Saint Johns Bible. In addition to the purchasing the Bible, my campus team of 10 went to Saint Johns University in Collegeville, MN for training in We had a display cabinet created two years ago for the library so that we can showcase one of the volumes there permanently.
And this month? William Tunberg, whose spectacular marquetry can be seen in virtually every space in the Fish Interfaith Center, delivered a stunning sculptural showcase that will stand just inside the magnificent Doti-Henley doors of the chapel. One volume will always be on display there.
What is The Saint Johns Bible? It is the life dream of Donald Jackson of Wales, who spent most of his working life as the Queen of England’s senior scribe. The monks of Saint Johns Abbey and University commissioned him in to create the first hand-lettered Bible since modern printing. The 1, calfskin vellum pages hold the calligraphy and illuminations of over a dozen artists from around the world. They used ancient inks and the quills of turkey, swan and geese for the writ
