The inspirations behind my Booker-shortlisted book
I wanted to write about our human occupation of low earth orbit for the last quarter of a century not as sci-fi but as realism. Could I evoke the beauty of that vantage point with the care of a nature writer? Could I write about amazement? Could I pull off a sort of space pastoral? These were the challenges I set myself.
The book that made me fall in love with reading
Roald Dahl's Danny the Champion of the World. That amazingly evoked relationship between a boy and his dad helped me understand (in my own kid-way) something new about the love between parents and children, and my own love for my parents.
The book that made me want to become a writer
This is difficult. I'm going to say Waterland by Graham Swift. I think it's the strength and quality of Swift's world-building, his gorgeous, layered storytelling flair and the sheer conviction of that

Samantha Harvey (born ) is an English novelist. She won the Booker Prize for her novel Orbital,[1][2] which drew on conventions from multiple genres and fields, including literary fiction, science fiction, and philosophy.
Early life and education
[edit]Harvey spent the first decade of her life in Ditton, Kent, near Maidstone, until her parents' divorce.[3] After that, her mother moved to Ireland, and Harvey spent her teen years moving around with stints in York, Sheffield, and Japan.[4] Harvey studied philosophy at the University of York and the University of Sheffield.[5] She completed the Bath Spa University Creative Writing MA course in ,[6] and has also completed a PhD in creative writing.[7]
Career
[edit]Her first novel, The Wilderness (), is written from the point of view of a man developing Alzheimer's disease,[8] and describes through increasingly fractured prose the unravelling effect of the disease.
