There’s a photograph of her with Fatima Sheikh (published in her collected works - SavitriBai Phule Samagra Vangmay, ed Dr MG Mali, published Maharashtra State Literature and Culture Board). The same publication also carries her 1856 letter to her husband from her parental home, which begins by explaining that she’s unwell and will be delayed returning home and adds “I know my absence causes Fatima so much extra work but I am sure she will understand and won’t grumble.”
I find these tantalising and rare glimpses into Savitri’s and Fatima’s friendship and comradeship fascinating.
I visited Pune not long ago - and was pleasantly surprised to find that the Phule’s home has been preserved faithfully exactly as it was a century and a half ago, and has been memorialised so beautifully.
