I have two answers for that.
1) "Most people there don't even buy the comics" has always come across to me as an excuse. Don't like criticism? Just say what someone says isn't valid unless they give you money. Of course, if they criticize AND give money, you can then say their criticism must not bother them much or else they wouldn't be spending money on it. In that way, someone who doesn't like criticism has a ready-made out to justify acting like it should be ignored.
2) Some of these people DO buy comics, just not these ones. Or they WOULD buy comics if Marvel published something they actually want. In many cases, they used to buy comics, but behavior like this led to them quitting and spending their money elsewhere.
